Why people don’t want to live - common reasons

To want to live again, you need to find out the reasons for the desire to die as soon as possible.

There can be many of them; psychologists classify the nature of the origin of such thoughts based on certain aspects of an individual’s life:

  • A life stage at which a person would like to have a certain status or baggage of benefits. Usually, by the age of 30, women who have not yet had time to start a family begin to think about the “biological clock”; if their experiences are supported by the condemnation of others, it can lead to prolonged depression. Men at this age are expected to have a successful career and constant wealth. If this is absent in his life, the condemnation of society and internal experiences can contribute to the emergence of negative thoughts.
  • There is nothing more to wish for. The opposite situation is in which people achieve their goals in all areas of life, but their nature as conquerors and leaders requires constant work and self-improvement. There is nowhere to move further, thoughts arise about the futility of life. Such internal problems most often worry wealthy people and pensioners who have retired and are no longer burdened with work, children and grandchildren.
  • Vicious circle. The phrase “I don’t want to live” can be heard from a person whose everyday life has turned into a gray, monotonous series of the same things. In such a cycle of monotony, the question may arise: why am I living? It can all start with the usual routine at work and at home, which later develops into a life that a person does not want to live.
  • Another reason why some people want to die is events that left an indelible mark. The death of a loved one, your own illness, a serious incident in the family or at work - all of this can contribute to the emergence of suicidal thoughts in some people. Such thoughts can also occur to people who have the ability to overreact to various events and dramatize.

How to live on if you have no strength and nothing works out

There are periods when you work so hard that you no longer have the strength, but there is no result, and you get the deceptive feeling that you need to try even harder. It is necessary to slow down and do everything calmly and slowly, reducing the priority of what is being done. Shift your attention to your own condition and, above all, take care of rest, emotional relief and breaks, and only in your free time do what you so zealously strived for earlier. The secret is quite simple - the more you care about yourself, the more resourceful state you are in and then new ideas can be born to optimize the process of introducing new ways of achieving, instead of punching a wall with your forehead when there is an open door a meter away from you.

In developing a strategy for how to live further if there is no strength and money, many begin to diligently save and force themselves to work more - the system is a failure, since it leads to a deterioration in physical condition, emotional well-being, and to the cessation of any progress in business. If you are tired, then you are going the wrong way - you are wasting a lot of energy, working in the wrong places where you can be useful, and not using optimization. If you notice that it’s not working out, then it makes sense to change the strategy for achieving it or the goal itself (well, you don’t teach a parrot to swim, or you teach a dog or a parrot to talk).

Exceeding expectations and impatience can lead to such conditions, so before setting deadlines and hoping for stunning results, monitor the situation regarding what you have in mind. Even a round-the-clock effort may not be enough due to the specifics of the activity being performed; perhaps it would be more important to relax and wait in inaction (remember that you cannot pull grass out of the ground). It is better to do something constantly and in small doses than to try to complete what you have planned in one moment, because both quality and your sense of self suffer from such an approach.

Another point that leads to the draining of internal resources and a destructive result is control. The more processes you try to control, the more nervous you become about the inconsistency of small details, and you lose energy. At the same time, control over everything does not allow you to navigate the situation and change the concept of action in time; it does not allow you to rely on the opinions of others, which takes up your time for constant checks; as a result, you do not respond to changes adequately.

How to overcome the reluctance to live

The feeling of unwillingness to live usually arises when a person does not receive from life what he, in his opinion, “should” receive; Life doesn't turn out the way we would like. He has some understanding, pictures of life, but something went wrong...

Obsessive thoughts appear that you are a “Loser”, “There is no point in living anymore”, “Nobody needs you”, your task is to learn to drive these thoughts out of your head.

We all know that thought is material, so by all means learn to remove negative thoughts. For they can not only lead to disorders of the nervous system, but also to disruption of the functioning of individual organs and even body systems.

There are several ways to remove obsessive thoughts from your head. Let's get to know them:

1. In order not to keep negativity to yourself, you can try swearing loudly, screaming, or at least slamming the table.

2. You can make intense hand gestures - as if you are driving away what happened.

3. A very effective way is to try to make fun of this situation, try to turn it into a joke. A good laugh has a positive effect on our psyche and drives bad thoughts out of our heads.

4. Relax, take a few deep breaths and exhalations, try to relieve tension, remember the happiest moments in your life, where you looked decent and from which you were able to emerge victorious, and thereby reduce the intensity of your experiences.

5. Then you need, if possible, try to calmly comprehend the event that happened, and then forget about everything.

6. Sometimes people cannot immediately clear their heads of anxiety and bad thoughts, then we remember the ancient wisdom: “nature does not tolerate emptiness” (including in the head) - and fill the empty space.

How? Yes, positive thoughts, pleasant fantasies, which should NOT even come close to real experiences. For example, if your head was filled with thoughts about parting with your loved one, you cannot forget him and stop thinking about him, and you constantly fantasize about meeting a nice young man at work or that an oligarch will unexpectedly pick you up - this, unfortunately, is unlikely will it help?

People can die from lack of desire to live

As unscientific as it may sound, give-up-itis is a real term used to describe a medically documented and as yet poorly understood phenomenon. It refers to a condition in which a person who has lost the will to live dies, despite the absence of a clear physiological cause. The phenomenon was first noted in American and South Korean soldiers who died in captivity in prisoner of war camps, and subsequently occurred in prisoner of war camps in Vietnam, as well as in shipwreck survivors. In hindsight, based on the recollections of survivors, it was determined that this was a common occurrence in Nazi concentration camps.

A common feature of “those-who-refused” cases is that they occur in a psychologically traumatic situation that feels overwhelming. The human psyche can respond to a seemingly hopeless situation with increasing apathy. Detachment from the surrounding life occurs to such an extent that, in the end, such people finally leave this world.

However, observations show that the death of “those who refused” can be avoided. People have recovered from similar pre-death states in others after finding causes that convinced them to reconnect with reality.

After examining a wealth of historical and contemporary evidence, University of Portsmouth researcher John Leach concluded that cases of "those who refused" are more common than thought. In fact, for the first time something similar was recorded in the 17th century. The latest recorded cases are the deaths of elderly people and some patients in hospital, characterized by the hallmarks of this phenomenon. To better understand this condition and, therefore, ways to avoid it, Dr. Leach decided to describe the clinical markers of the phenomenon. In a paper published in Medical Hypotheses

, it defines a five-phase pattern that the “he-who-has-refused” state follows. The author hypothesizes that it is based on brain activity.

“Psychogenic death is a reality. It's not suicide, it's not associated with depression, but it works like giving up on life. Death occurs within a few days. This is a real phenomenon, often associated with serious trauma,” says Leach in a paper in which he describes the expectation of death in “those who have refused” as a possible mechanism for adaptation to the intolerable pressure of the situation.

The first phase, social withdrawal, is common in people who suffer significant trauma. For those who have already given up, this unrecognized isolation progresses into the next phase: apathy. Leach drew information from survivors' testimonies to describe this type of apathy. This demoralizing melancholy, different from anger, sadness or frustration, feels like being “caught in deep inertia.” At this point the individual often stops caring for himself. In the third stage of lack of will, apathy increases so much that the person does not show the desire to perform daily tasks, people often stop speaking and eating.

“The interesting thing about lack of will is that consciousness was empty, devoid of content. Survivors described this stage as if the consciousness was devoid of any thoughts or interference. With lack of will, the mind was on pause, and the person lost the desire for goal-directed behavior,” says Leach.

The fourth stage, physical immobility, is characterized by loss of response to physical stimuli, even severe pain. As a result, if there is no intervention, “those who refused” find themselves on the verge of moving to the next, fifth, stage - death.

“At this point,” Leach says, “they can lie in their excrement and do nothing—not pay any attention to it. No beatings, no persuasion can bring them back to life.”

Leach believes that changes occurring in certain areas of the brain called the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) may be responsible for the pathology of the “rejected.” The ACC is responsible for motivating and initiating goal-directed behavior. Interruption of dopamine signaling in this area is the cause of apathetic behavior.
