Introduction
Not every person can withstand the modern rhythm, and sometimes a state of emotional and nervous exhaustion sets in, from which it is impossible to get out without medications. It is quite difficult to choose over-the-counter sedatives with strong effects.
It is strictly not recommended to independently select medications for therapy; only a doctor can determine the true cause of the pathology and select the appropriate medication.
Phenibut
Beta-Phenyl-γ-aminobutyric acid (also known as Noofen, Citrocard and Phenibut) is a sedative of the gabapentinoids class. This compound, a derivative of phenethylamine and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), plays an important role in brain function. Its intake normalizes the metabolism of nervous tissue and at the same time signal transmission between neurons.
In particular, phenibut plays an important role in strengthening cortical-subcortical connections, which increases the efficiency of communication between different parts of the cerebral cortex. It is chemically related to baclofen, pregabalin and gabapentin.
Gamma-aminobutyric acid, or GABA, is a neurotransmitter whose main job is to send chemical messages through the nervous system and brain, while taking an active role in regulating communication between brain cells. The role of GABA is to suppress or reduce the activity of nerve cells or neurons. Affects:
- the body's response to stress;
- memory work.
Numerous studies have shown that GABA helps control fear and anxiety when neurons become overexcited. Lower than normal levels of GABA in the brain have been recorded in people with schizophrenia, sleep disorders, depression, and unreasonable worries.
Phenibut tablets were developed in the Soviet Union in the 1960s, where they were used as a pharmaceutical drug to treat a wide range of conditions, including post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, depression, asthenia, insomnia, alcoholism, stuttering and vestibular disorders. In the rest of the world, the antidepressant drug Phenibut is not approved for clinical use, but is sold as a dietary supplement without a prescription.
Cognitive effects:
- Anxiety Suppression – Phenibut has moderate to strong anxiolytic effects, although generally less potent than benzodiazepines.
- Disinhibition – sedative Phenibut has a strong disinhibitory effect, comparable to the effects of higher doses of alcohol, benzodiazepines or GABA.
- Cognitive euphoria – This effect is more pronounced than that of benzodiazepines, most likely due to the clearer and more stimulating nature of the drug.
- Increased empathy, affection and communication skills. Phenibut has been reported to have prosocial and mild entactogenic effects that, although significantly weaker than traditional entactogens, are noticeable and well detectable even at normal doses.
- Increased motivation.
- Enhances Focus – Lower doses may enhance focus and concentration. This effect usually reverses with increasing dose.
Tablets are classified as sedatives that are available without a prescription and are reasonably priced and highly effective. It is recommended to consult your doctor before starting therapy.
Strong homeopathic remedies
Stronger over-the-counter sedatives for nerves are homeopathic remedies that work much faster and, at the same time, are harmless.
These medications can also be purchased without a prescription:
- Gelarium – contains St. John's wort extract, eliminates depressed mood, anxiety, and has a relaxing effect. It is used in cases of depression at an early stage, with mental instability, apathy, and neuroses. It is not recommended to take the medication with some potent drugs, with a lack of lactase, increased sensitivity to light, or intolerance. Feature: simultaneous intake with food.
- Neurosed (granules) – the drug can be used to treat insomnia, neurotic disorders, during menopause, and with increased excitability. Practically, it has no side effects.
- NervoHeel is an anticonvulsant, sedative without age restrictions, does not affect psychomotor function, does not cause addiction, and is used for psychosomatic diseases, episodes of depression, and withdrawal symptoms of various etiologies. Side effects include skin irritation, rash with high sensitivity.
Tenoten, Calm has a similar effect . Due to the fact that the tablets must be dissolved, the necessary substances quickly enter the bloodstream and begin their effect.
For the nervous system
If a woman or man experiences a severe stressful situation or a nervous breakdown, doctors usually recommend over-the-counter sedatives, as they have a targeted, fast, safe and gentle effect on the body. As long-term medical practice shows, this method allows you to effectively relax emotionally, pull yourself together, and calm frayed nerves without harming your own health.
The list of sedatives for the nervous system includes:
- Bromine preparations – potassium or sodium bromides. Prescribed in strict dosage for diagnosed neuroses. The course of treatment using sedatives is intended exclusively for adults. Side effects may occur: confusion, drowsiness. Representatives of this group of medicinal sedatives are: Sodium bromide, Potassium bromide, Adonis bromide.
- Sedatives – relaxation of smooth muscles after 15-20 minutes. Non-prescription sedatives from this group that a doctor can recommend are Persia, Chamomile, Sanoson tablets, Nervoflux.
For adults
A variety of sedatives are prescribed for different age groups. For the nervous system of an adult, the ideal option would be to take drugs such as Afobazol, Gerbion, Phenibut. They help effectively combat a variety of neurological disorders with a minimum number of side effects.
Both adults and children from 6 years of age can take drugs such as Pantogam and Deprim.
Deprim is based on St. John's wort extract, which helps to effectively combat depressive disorders of varying severity. A sedative is recommended for frequent mood swings, anxiety, and sleep problems. Among the advantages it is worth noting:
- natural component composition;
- effective fight against depression;
- Suitable for use from 6 years of age;
- helps normalize mental health.
The downside is that the sedative is cumulative, therefore, the effect will not be visible from the first use. For advanced depression, it is recommended to choose a more powerful drug.
Pantogam is one of the best nootropic drugs, the main task of which is to normalize blood circulation in the brain. Available in the form of tablets and syrup, dispensed only after providing a prescription from a doctor. Indications for use of the drug: developmental delay, asthenovegetative syndrome. Among the advantages it is worth noting:
- effective sedative;
- stimulates improvement of attention;
- has a positive effect on memory;
- does not harm the body;
- has a persistent accumulative effect.
Please note that in the first 1-3 days there may be excessive excitability.
Strong
If a person experiences unreasonable irritability and anger, doctors recommend taking a course of sedatives without prescriptions. If we consider strong sedatives, then we can consider antidepressants and tranquilizers. This kind of powerful help is prescribed when complex manifestations of depression occur, when the patient is unable to independently cope with a depressing state and changeable mood.
Among the most popular available sedatives from the group of antidepressants, it is worth noting tablets:
- Clofranil;
- Melipramine;
- Anafralin;
- Saroten;
- Imipramine.
As for tranquilizers, they have one main drawback - a hypnotic effect. For children of this group, sedatives are contraindicated. Before starting use, you must consult your doctor.
The most famous sedatives of the group of over-the-counter tranquilizers are:
- Atarax;
- Lorazepam;
- Phenazepam;
- Bromazepas;
- Diazepam.
We remind you: self-medication can harm your health and aggravate the manifestation of mental imbalance.

For neuroses, insomnia and frequent stress, the attending physician may recommend remedies with hawthorn, valerian, motherwort, peony, and lemon balm. Of the most prominent representatives of this category, it is worth noting: tablets or tincture of Valerian, Alor, motherwort preparations, tincture of peony.
Inexpensive
There is another group - neuroleptics - sedatives, which are recommended for use with extreme caution and in accordance with medical recommendations. The drugs are inexpensive and help cope with:
- neuroses;
- attacks of nervous disorder;
- panic attacks;
- mental turmoil.
They contain components of synthetic origin, which ensures a gentle effect on the body of a child and an adult. Among the most common: Alimemazine, Clozapine, Dicarbine, Sulpiride, Droperidol.
The best sedatives of synthetic origin
Afobazole
An effective, strong anti-stress drug belonging to the group of tranquilizers.
It is considered one of the best remedies for combating stress, anxiety and relieving panic attacks. The action of the drug is aimed at stimulating memory and thought processes. Does not cause drowsiness or addiction, is taken based on individual dosage. The therapeutic effect is noticeable after 5 days after the start of administration. The course of treatment can range from one week to one month. In addition to relieving panic attacks and anxiety, and sleep disorders, Afobazol is also prescribed for the treatment of withdrawal symptoms (stabilization of the body after stopping taking drugs). The disadvantages of the drug include a number of side effects, the inability to take it during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and age restrictions (from 18 years).
Valoserdin
The drug, available in the form of drops, is based on peppermint and phenobarbital. Prescribed to combat insomnia, tachycardia, spasms of internal organs (intestines, heart), increased irritability. Despite the strong and rapid therapeutic effect, the drug has a number of contraindications (age under 18 years, pregnancy, lactation, liver and kidney diseases), as well as side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness and fatigue. With prolonged use, loss of coordination and depression may occur.

In addition to normalizing sleep, the drug has a positive effect on the body during panic attacks, frequent stress, and helps during periods of quitting smoking or taking drugs. The drug is available without a prescription, however, it is not a drug, so it is advisable to consult a doctor before using it. Contraindicated in pregnant and lactating women, children under 18 years of age, as well as people with hypersensitivity or intolerance to certain components of the drug.
Glycine
Glycine-based tablets are aimed at stabilizing the functioning of the central nervous system, stimulating mental processes, and reducing psycho-emotional stress. The main indications for the use of the drug are decreased mental capacity, various diseases of the nervous system, stressful situations, and strokes. A relatively cheap drug, Glycine has virtually no contraindications and is approved for use by children, helping to combat deviant behavior in adolescents. When using the drug, the possibility of overdose is excluded, because Glycine is one of the amino acids found in the body. Side effects when consumed are possible only in the form of allergic reactions.
Fast acting
Fast-acting medications come in the form of drops, subcutaneous injections and tablets. As for injections, they are available only by prescription. As practice shows, regardless of the speed of impact on the body, for some patients one course is enough, while others need re-treatment after a 7-14 day break.
Fast-acting herbal medicinal tinctures.
- Motherwort tincture is a sedative with a strong effect, which is sold in pharmacies in the form of oral drops. They have a harmless and mild effect. Contraindications include intolerance to alcohol or motherwort. On average, the daily dose is 60 drops, divided into 3 equal doses.

- Morozov drops - help relieve anxiety. Contains natural ingredients: hawthorn, peppermint, valerian, alcohol-based motherwort root. It is prescribed for both treatment and preventive purposes.
No hypnotic effect
Sedatives help reduce emotional stress by affecting the central nervous system, but do not interfere with its functioning:
- excitement decreases due to dulling of nervous reactions;
- intestinal spasms are relieved, sweating and heart rate are reduced;
- help to gently get rid of conditions such as: irritability, mood swings, aggression, tearfulness;
- restore and normalize sleep, while preventing the hypnotic effect.
The best sedatives are medications that have a general calming effect on the central nervous system (CNS). Sedatives have an effect in reducing the reaction to various external stimuli and in a slight decrease in daily activity.
Sedatives regulate the action of the central nervous system, while reducing excitation processes or increasing inhibition processes. The best sedatives:
- facilitate, normalize and deepen natural sleep;
- restore mental state;
- support relaxation and calm;
- reduce irritability;
- enhance the effect of analgesics, hypnotics and other drugs that depress the central nervous system.
Sedatives do not provoke the development of addiction, unlike other drugs that help fight irritation and stress. But also calming tablets fully or partially relieve pronounced emotional stress and restore the functioning of the cardiovascular system. The most popular and best sedatives are those based on herbal components.
From aggression
One of the common symptoms of stress or uneven exhaustion is aggression. The most effective over-the-counter sedatives for aggression.
- Afobazole is a mild tranquilizer that effectively relieves symptoms of increased anxiety and calms. Moreover, even with long-term use, the drug does not cause addiction, lethargy or drowsiness.
- Glycine is a sedative. The tablets need to be sucked to provide a relaxing effect. With long-term use, it reduces aggressiveness and conflict (especially important for adolescence), and increases stress resistance.

Non-addictive
“All diseases come from nerves” - this phrase was heard from doctors in the 20th century, but in the 21st century nothing has changed. The modern rhythm of life dictates its own rules, with increased demands and greater fatigue. As a result, there are problems with sleep, emotional instability, irritability, fatigue, etc. In order to regain a full life without discomfort, doctors recommend taking sedatives.
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are a class of medications originally developed to treat depression, but have been found to be just as effective in reducing anxiety. Anti-anxiety medications work by increasing the amount of serotonin in the brain, which improves mood. They are particularly effective in treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
Non-addictive sedatives:
- Fluoxetine (Prozac);
- Escitalopram (Lexapro);
- Citalopram (Celexa);
- Paroxetine (Paxil);
- Sertraline (Zoloft).
The disadvantage of non-addictive anxiety medications, SSRIs, is that they take four to six weeks to feel the full effect. They can also cause unpleasant withdrawal effects if you stop taking them suddenly, including dizziness, nausea or vomiting, chills, a feeling of shock or brain traffic, and blurred vision. Possible side effects of sedatives:
- drowsiness;
- insomnia;
- dry mouth;
- sexual problems;
- nausea.
What is the danger of stress for a person?
Stress can be caused by both negative and joyful factors.
The danger in both cases is an aggravated reaction of the nervous system, leading to:
- hysterics;
- insomnia;
- depressed or “cocked” state;
- loss of appetite.
If the effects are short-lived, the damage to health may be insignificant; with prolonged stress, persistent depression, health problems, and the development of mental disorders are possible. Distress is considered dangerous when a person is unable to cope with emotions on his own.
As a result, you may experience:
- decreased immunity;
- disruptions in the digestive system;
- dysfunctions of the nervous system;
- problems with the heart and blood vessels;
- deterioration of attention and memory;
- decreased performance;
- development of primary mental disorders (susceptibility, causeless panic).
Modern
Modern sedatives, which are freely available in pharmacies, can be divided into three categories.
- Sedative homeopathic remedies - based on herbal ingredients. During administration there is a high risk of an allergic reaction. The list of such drugs includes: Nervohel, Nevrosed, Calm, Leovit tablets, Negrustin, Tenoten tablets and drops. They do not contribute to addiction and have a mild sedative effect.
- Synthetic sedatives - based on components grown in laboratory conditions. These are antipsychotics, tranquilizers and antidepressants. The most popular today: Zyprexa, Stresam, Risset, Adaptol, Melaxen, Glycine and Prozac lozenges.
- Soothing combination products - based on plant and synthetic components. They do not put additional stress on the liver and kidneys. Among the most common: Florised, Sedafiton, Deprim, Notta tablets and drops, Relaxil, Novo-Passit tablets, Persen.
As medical research shows, the safest for the human body are herbal and combined sedatives. In any case, you should consult your doctor before purchasing.
List of combination sedatives
Novo-Passit
The combined composition of drugs is optimal for achieving several therapeutic effects at once. These drugs are widely used in modern pharmacology. According to sales ratings and statistical surveys, the list of the best combination products with herbal ingredients included Novo-Passit, Corvaltab and Persen. But on the modern market of medicinal products there are many more such drugs:
- Dormiplant, made from valerian and lemon balm, with sedative, antispasmodic and hypnotic effects;
- Menovalen - from valerian and peppermint, with a mild calming effect, eliminating nervousness and irritability;
- Sedavit - made from hawthorn, hop cones, St. John's wort, mint extract, vitamins PP and B6, recommended for nervous tension and has a number of additional positive effects;
- Sedariston from the herb St. John's wort and auxiliary substances, known as an emotional stabilizer;
- Perselac - with valerian, mint, hawthorn and mint, is used as a dietary supplement and has received excellent reviews;
- Sedaphyton - with valerian and motherwort, which also contains biologically active components;
- Deprim is a drug based on the active components of St. John's wort, which increases physical activity and at the same time improves the functioning of the nervous system;
- Life 600 - based on St. John's wort extracts, has an active antidepressant property, capable of combating low mood, chronic fatigue and decreased ability to work.
Special mention should be made of Glycine. This is an essential amino acid with a pronounced sedative and antidepressant effect, the use of which has become widespread to stimulate brain function, relieve irritability and aggressiveness, and emotional stress.
Just like the effect of St. John's wort extracts, the mechanism of interaction with human amino acid metabolism, participation in biochemical processes and interaction with other drugs have not been fully studied. Therefore, it is better to consult your doctor before taking these medications. Strong sedatives without a prescription, even of natural origin, can negatively affect the general condition of the body.
No drowsiness
Modern sedatives in most cases do not cause drowsiness; their main task is not sleeping pills, but normalizing sleep by relaxing the nervous system. Do you want to restore your sleep-free state? Determine the cause of the problem and select therapy taking into account the indications/contraindications of a particular drug.
This article is presented for informational purposes only and is not a call for the use of a particular medicine.
Sedatives are sold without a prescription
Before looking for a list of sedative pills without a prescription and running to buy them, it would not hurt to consult with a neurologist. Sedatives are not at all as harmless as is commonly believed. Their free sale means nothing.
This group of medicines got its name from the Latin word sedativus - soothing. In terms of the effect they produce, they are similar to tranquilizers, but they produce a less pronounced effect on the human body and are not considered addictive. Doctors admit that the mechanism of action of many of them has not been studied, or not sufficiently studied. It is necessary to consider the principle of operation of the medicine and its effect on the nervous system before buying tablets and swallowing them, at any opportunity.
Some sedatives inhibit the functioning of the nervous system and can interfere with daily activities. Others establish a balance between the processes of inhibition and excitation. And still others reduce excitability and slow down the passage of nerve impulses.
How to take it correctly
The effectiveness of treatment depends on how we take medications, so the procedure for taking medications is too important to be neglected. Before taking medications, you should carefully read the instructions and consult your doctor.
Please note that teas, infusions and syrups are less susceptible to food influence, for this reason there are no barriers for them on the way from the esophagus to the intestines. In turn, the encapsulated and tablet forms of drugs that were taken with food will remain in the stomach for a long time, as a result, the period of absorption of their active substance will be significantly slowed down.
Instructions for use may indicate different time frames for taking medications:
- on an empty stomach - at least half an hour before breakfast;
- before meals - half an hour before any food intake;
- during meals - it is advisable to take the medicine at the end of the meal;
- after meals - half an hour after meals;
- if the instructions do not contain strict instructions regarding the time of taking the medication, then it should be taken half an hour before meals.
Do not drink juices, sparkling water, tea or coffee, as they contain substances that can interact with medications and change their effectiveness.
You can learn more about how to take medications correctly, how to eat during treatment and how to prepare your stomach for a feast, from your doctor.
Sedatives for the elderly
The peculiarity of treatment for older people is the correct selection of medications for various diseases so that they do not neutralize each other’s effect and do not enhance it more than acceptable.
The compatibility of sedatives is determined by the characteristics of their composition, as well as those medications that the patient takes on an ongoing basis. For this reason, the use of sedatives must be coordinated with the attending physician.
How long should I take it?
Anti-anxiety pills and minor tranquilizers work best when taken on a short-term basis rather than as an ongoing treatment. This is because for most people:
- they become less effective if taken over a period of time;
- they can be addictive if taken regularly.
For most people, the following recommendations apply:
- take a sedative for no more than three weeks, and preferably no more than a week;
- Take anti-anxiety medications for no more than four weeks, including the withdrawal period;
- try not to take them every day.
Side effects:
- drowsiness;
- unexplained aggression;
- nausea;
- apathy, increased lethargy;
- loss of appetite;
- kidney and liver problems;
- dizziness;
- hallucinations, etc.
If you notice symptoms of addiction or side effects, you should immediately consult your doctor to eliminate the symptoms and, if necessary, select an alternative treatment.
In general, sedatives are a great short-term solution, but not for long-term therapy.
Sedatives for children
The peculiarity of the treatment of children is that in preschool children the nervous system is not yet fully formed, and in adolescence, mood swings are associated with puberty. In both cases, the use of strong sedatives can seriously harm health and cause developmental delays. Especially for preschool children and patients under 18 years of age, medications are created using natural ingredients that have a mild sedative effect and have a short list of side effects.
Phenibut
The nootropic medicine not only eliminates central nervous system excitation, but also has a positive effect on the child’s mental processes. It is based on aminophenyl butyric acid, which improves the speed of transmission of nerve impulses.
Phenibut is prescribed for the following symptoms:
- Problems falling asleep;
- Neurosis;
- Anxious state.
Take Phenibut 1-2 tablets up to three times a day for 1-2 months. After the course, take a break of 1 month and repeat treatment if necessary.
Long-term therapy must be combined with periodic examination of the functions of the liver and kidneys, and with a blood test to ensure that the number of red blood cells is normal.
Pantogam
A nootropic sedative based on the calcium salt of hopantenic acid is available only with a doctor's prescription. Pantogam improves cerebral circulation and has a pronounced anticonvulsant effect.
The drug is well accepted by most patients and is available in the form of tablets or sweet syrup. Used to stimulate mental development, in the presence of corresponding deviations.
Pantogam is prescribed to children with severe symptoms of impaired sleep, with obvious psychomotor impairment, and even when obsessive movements and tics are often observed.
The dosage, as well as the duration of treatment, is calculated by the doctor separately for each case, depending on the age and characteristics of the patient’s body.
The list of contraindications includes:
- Kidney pathology;
- Intolerance to the components of the composition;
- First trimester of pregnancy.
With long-term treatment and overdose, allergic reactions may occur.
Magne B6
The drug, which acts as a dietary supplement, replenishes the lack of magnesium in the blood and improves its absorption.
Magne B6 is prescribed for frequent occurrence of the following symptoms:
- Irritability;
- Intestinal colic of nervous etiology;
- Frequent heartbeat;
- Fatigue.
The medicine is contraindicated in children under 6 years of age, as well as in persons with fructose intolerance.
Take 2 tablets during meals with a glass of water. When the amount of magnesium in the blood is replenished, therapy is stopped.
