The phenomenon of fear: why we are afraid of something and what happens in the body

If we look at our life from the point of view of psychology, we will understand such a thing that fear is just an emotion that protects us from a negative outcome. But with the time of brain evolution, we are still afraid of what we do not fully understand, which is where the negative emotion seems to us to be associated with fear. So how can you not be afraid of anything?

Fear is our ally, it helps us live and survive. For example, when you drive a car, it is fear that prevents you from committing traffic violations. Thus, it saves life. But fear has another side, it tries to protect us from useful things. For example, from dentists.

Conclusion : fear is our ally, but it needs to be retrained.

Attention , the simplest and most effective technique for overcoming fear, at the end of the article.

How can adults not be afraid of the dentist?

All people are afraid of pain to some extent. So, when we think about going to the dentist, we remember how in childhood we had our teeth drilled and this caused significant discomfort. But fear of the dentist can lead to more serious consequences, namely intolerable pain. If you get caries or some kind of pulpitis. The cheek will swell, and the pain will be uncontrollable and you will still have to go to the dentist.

✅Guide to changing yourself .pdf

So just stop and think that if you need to go to the dentist, you will still have to go sooner or later. If you go now, everything will go smoothly, with a minimum of pain and cheaper. If you start the development of tooth decay, you will have to suffer more and pay much more money. And the painkillers are good now, so you won’t feel anything. Or are you afraid of spending a lot of money on the dentist?

How not to be afraid of death?

Fear of death is the most common fear among people. But rather, people are afraid not of death itself, but of the torment before death, right? Or are you afraid that you haven’t done something important in life and are now afraid of death? If so, then read the article about the midlife crisis.

But let's look at death itself, because it is a natural process and everyone will go through it sooner or later. At any second, our life can end, so why wait for this moment, if it is better to dedicate this time to life itself? As it is written in many esoteric knowledge, death is our ally. And she rather helps you live than waits to pick you up.

And if you are afraid of suffering before death, well, it depends on what kind of death, but according to statistics, there are few people who die a painful death, and what is torture? Everything is tolerable, the main thing is to live so as not to regret, that’s where the torment itself lies.

What do people fear most?

The number of fears accumulated by a person by mid-life is incalculable. Most people hide their phobias, afraid (again, afraid) to appear funny in the eyes of others, who, in turn, hide the fear behind feigned bravado.

Based on opinion polls in which several thousand people around the world took part, a rating of “What a person fears most” was compiled.

  1. Loneliness.
  2. Death.
  3. Social phobia.
  4. Spiders, rats, cockroaches, snakes, etc.
  5. Intimacy.
  6. Madness.
  7. Bacteria and germs (verminophobia).
  8. Cowardice.
  9. Poisoning.
  10. Old age.

Interestingly, the fear of being alone and rejected by society prevails over the fear of death. Although this state of affairs is confirmed by facts, when criminals who committed atrocities at sea preferred to be hanged in their homeland than to be left on a desert island.

How not to be afraid to fly on an airplane - advice from a psychologist

An airplane is a highly dangerous vehicle. But the plane is the safest mode of transport. Even though you might board a plane expecting something to go wrong, statistically it's not going to happen.

Although I myself am worried before takeoff, I adequately assess the likelihood of an accident on an airplane because, living on earth, much more sophisticated dangers await us than from flying on an airplane.

If you have a really strong and panic attack about flying, but you need to fly, then write to me, we’ll deal with this problem in one go using hypnosis or other techniques. It’s better to eliminate the situation in the bud than to waste nerve cells during a flight or take alcohol for courage.

How not to be afraid of a fight?

It depends on what kind of fight it is, if it’s a fight in the ring, it’s one thing, but if it’s on the street, it’s completely different. In any case, fear of a fight is normal. Many famous fighters calmly say that they are afraid of a fight and that’s normal. If you are not afraid of a fight, then something is wrong with your body’s psychological defenses. Although the matter may be different, you have learned ZEN and are not afraid of death and defeat.

Fights in the street are another matter. If you are attacked by gopniks on the street, then it is easier to run away and this is also normal. Since you don’t know whether the attackers have a knife or some kind of gun, so from the point of view of protecting yourself, it’s better to be a coward.

What to do if you are walking with a girl and gopniks attack? Well, buddy, then piss, but send your girlfriend behind your back, or better yet, let her scratch it quickly, and you try to resolve the conflict. If it’s a robbery, then do whatever they ask, again you don’t know what’s on their mind. And then call the police immediately. But ideally, you need to sign up for a rocking gym and preferably for a fight, boost your confidence in sparring, and then the gopniks will definitely not get to the bottom of you.

Should you be afraid of your own fear?

Edvard Munch. Scream

Every day there is some reason for fear. We are afraid of troubles that can befall us: illnesses of loved ones, dismissal from work, economic crisis, that children will grow up ignorant, helpless, sick, that our son will be drafted into the army... We are afraid of products with harmful chemicals, crime on city streets, we are afraid that the authorities may begin to interfere more persistently in our lives; we are afraid of environmental disasters and the end of the world. If our child went to school, to a club, or went for a walk in the yard, we are afraid that something might happen to him. The same thing happens when someone at home stays somewhere after work. If today we have no personal reason to be afraid, television news will make us afraid, threatening possible wars and other misfortunes. Fears control the hearts of many people. And much of what people do every day is dictated not by their own desire or need, but by fear.

Can such fears be present in the soul and thoughts of a Christian? Should a Christian experience fear at all? The fear of God is often spoken of in the sense that one only needs to fear God and that the person who fears God should not fear anything else. In fact, it often turns out that a Christian fears both God and all worldly “terrible” things at the same time, and the fear of God becomes for a person not deliverance from fears, but, as it were, the “main, supreme fear,” the fear that dominates other fears of his life .

Does faith save you from all fears? Should a Christian be completely fearless? What should we do if, despite the fact that we are believers, church-going Christians, we are still afraid? Should we be afraid of the Last Judgment? To answer these questions, you need to understand how fears affect a person and why they are harmful to us.

People whose souls are filled with fear defend themselves by getting angry at others.

People in a state of fear behave differently. Some people are paralyzed by fear, while others become restless, begin to move actively, rush somewhere, try to do something, but all their actions remain ineffective and resemble running in place. In any case, fear plunges a person into a state of helplessness and distrust of everything that surrounds him. The world becomes an evil, hostile environment for him, every person in it is a source of potential danger. As a reaction to the hostility of the environment, a person develops embitterment. From time to time we meet people who criticize and condemn everyone, aptly notice and ridicule other people's “shortcomings”. Most often, these are people whose souls are filled to the brim with fear, fear of people, their evil actions towards themselves, and the person defends himself by rushing to get angry at people himself.

Feeling helpless and angry, we are unlikely to respond to someone's request for help. In a state of fear, everyone is for himself. Considering another person an enemy, capable of attacking us at any moment, we are unlikely to be generous and kind to him.

Fear of “bad” people and “bad” events drives us into submission to circumstances

A person for whom fear has become a chronic condition develops a feeling of his inevitable dependence on those who, in his opinion, can ruin his life: from his employer, officials, police officers, the state. Thus, we often hear from some people the pronoun “they”, applied to any unspecified group of people, from the government to market sellers: these are the “they” from whom we don’t know what to expect, who have “taken over everything” or “only think that There is still more to be squeezed out of us,” “they only care about themselves,” or “they have taken our jobs.” Also, a person may feel dependent on those economic and natural processes due to which the value of the dollar increases, floods and tsunamis occur. Thus, the fear of “bad” people and “bad” events drives us into submission to circumstances that seem insurmountable to us. Instead of submitting to the will of God, we submit to our “insoluble situations”, “insurmountable difficulties”, we stop building our lives in accordance with our desires and beliefs, we stop acting independently, and we easily submit to someone else’s, external will. We cease to follow the words of the Apostle Paul, who said: “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, acceptable and perfect will of God” (Rom. 12:2).

The soul of a person who is in constant fear feels constrained, it resembles a fetus frozen in the womb before a miscarriage may occur. And often people in a state of fear decide to commit suicide, wanting to quickly leave the world where they are so scared. This state of mind affects a person’s ability to act. I know people who are capable of much, but are driven into a corner by their fears and fear of overcoming circumstances that have not brought fruit useful to people. Prolonged fear prevents a person from realizing plans that develop his personality and grow his soul. There comes a certain stop in his life, which can drag on for many years!

For example, one of my friends began to be regularly rejected from interviews. They refused once, twice, three times - as a result, he decided that he would no longer apply for a job. I began to sit at home and, as an “armchair critic,” comment on everything that was happening outside the window.

People shackled by fear tend to postpone all important matters until later, for that unrealizable time when the situation in the world will be more favorable, that is, for such a time when the world will fully correspond to the sense of security of a frightened person. Such a time never comes. I met with married couples who did not decide to have children “in our time, when there is such an economic (political, environmental, etc.) situation,” and deprived their family of continuation, refused those changes in their spiritual life that give motherhood and fatherhood.

Concern about loved ones often displaces love for them and replaces it

I have also often encountered this problem: parents, in fear for their children, interfere with their personal and spiritual development. For example, one young man, under pressure from his mother, refused to continue his studies: his mother did not let him go to study in another city. Sometimes it concerns not only children, but brothers, sisters, parents, and other close relatives. Concern about loved ones often displaces love for them, replaces it, and takes the place of love. A mother can spiritually “feed” a child with love, or she can feed her with anxiety and fear for life. People full of fear always try to keep their loved ones with them, preventing them from making any changes in life: getting married, going to college, moving to another city, country. For them, comfort in what they call “stability” is when everything and everyone does not change with them and stands still.

Fear and faith don't mix

Having thought about all this, we see that fear is not compatible with faith, with trust in God, and trust in Him. The qualities that are important for a Christian: spiritual generosity, love for people, compassion, readiness to actively help another person, support, impart confidence and peace of mind, cannot be developed by a person numb with fear. A person who wants to give love to others, develop, and bear fruit should not be afraid; one who is always in the hand of God need not worry. The opposite of fear is trust. Trust in God!

At the same time, any person, including a Christian, cannot become absolutely fearless. There is a natural, natural fear - as a means of self-defense in times of danger. It is clear that in the face of a real threat to his life and the lives of loved ones, a person is afraid. Such fear is a signal that a person must concentrate and find the best way to overcome the danger. A prayerful appeal to God at such moments helps to choose the only correct action. Often, as soon as a person begins to act in the right direction, fear goes away.

Three Youths in the Babylonian Furnace
Three Youths in the Babylonian Furnace

Now about the fear of God. These words are understood differently. You can be afraid that God will punish for sins now, in this life; one can be afraid of retribution after death - the underworld and the Last Judgment. For many people, the first steps on the path of faith begin with such fear, with horror of the sin committed and fear of retribution. Some begin to do “good deeds” mechanically, because the Church demands repentance from them, out of fear of future punishment for the sin committed, and this also brings its own benefits. Only later does their work become conscious, done because others need it, and the fear of retribution leaves the soul!

For a believer, the worst thing is to lose contact with God, not to feel, not to hear Him.

But a more serious understanding of the fear of God for an Orthodox Christian is rather to be afraid (or rather, not to want) to be outside God’s hands, outside, in the field where evil operates. The fear of God is the fear of doing evil. In the first chapter of Exodus we read about how the Egyptian Pharaoh ordered the midwives to kill newborn Hebrew boys: “But the midwives feared God, and did not do as the king of Egypt told them, and left the children alive.” For a person who has some experience in faith, this is what usually becomes the most terrible thing: to violate one of the laws of love and thereby lose contact with God, not to feel, not to hear Him. Being in such fear of God, a Christian constantly worries about always remaining pure before God, maintaining contact with Him through deeds and prayer. In part, this may be similar to a non-believer’s fear of contracting some kind of infection: regular hand washing becomes his habit. Thus, fearing to fall out of God’s hands, a Christian habitually takes care of the purity of his soul. “Light, entering a dark house, drives out darkness from it and illuminates it. Thus, the fear of the Lord, having entered the human heart, disperses its darkness, fills it with all virtues and wisdom,” says St. Anthony the Great about the fear of God.

Concerned about our loved ones, let us entrust them to God with our prayer

What should we do if we, being Christians, are still worried about our loved ones and their health? Or at least that nothing happens to them while they are on the road?

Entrust them to God with your prayer. Here, for example, is what is said in the morning prayer of the Optina elders:

“Lord, let me meet with peace of mind everything that the coming day will bring me. Let me completely surrender to Your Holy will. For every hour of this day, instruct and support me so that I can see Your will for me and those around me. Whatever news I receive during this day, teach me to accept it with a calm soul and with firm hope that everything is Your holy will. Guide my thoughts and feelings in my deeds and words; in all unforeseen cases, do not let me forget that they were sent down by You. Teach me to act directly and reasonably with each family member, without confusing or upsetting anyone. Give me the strength to endure the fatigue of the coming day and surrender all the events of this day to Your will. Teach me to pray, hope, believe, love and forgive. Amen".

And also: “I lie down and sleep and get up, for the Lord protects me. I will not be afraid of the people who have taken up arms against me on all sides,” we read in David’s 3rd Psalm.

We live in an era when clearly visible miracles do not often occur, and sometimes we tend to mistake the stories of miracles in the Old Testament as artistic representation or exaggeration, such as the story in the book of the prophet Daniel about three men who were thrown into a fiery furnace and came out alive. :

“And having gathered together, the satraps, governors, military leaders and advisers of the king saw that the fire had no power over the bodies of these men, and the hair on their heads was not singed, and their clothes did not change, and even the smell of fire was not on them” (Dan. 3). : 27).

Why do we, modern Christians, not feel as confident in the hands of God as the Old Testament men? Maybe for us the words “Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but are not able to kill the soul” (Matthew 10:28) are less significant than for the first Christians, if we still continue to be afraid? Are our circumstances more onerous than those of the people of old? Or: “trust, but verify”?

In addition to prayers asking for help, deliverance and protection, we will pray for the blessing of our loved ones. Such prayers will bring peace and fearlessness to our own souls. What can we worry about if we have entrusted the life of our loved one to God, and what could threaten the one whom God has blessed at our request?

How not to be afraid of heights?

I heard or read somewhere that the fear of heights is equal to the fear of big money. I don’t know how long this is true, but it’s worth thinking about. Conduct analysis. Fear of heights is a natural reaction of the body, which is very worried about its life. It's normal to be afraid of heights.

Of course, I saw air conditioner installers who climbed completely out of the window to connect the internal unit to the external one and, looking at this, I was afraid for this man even more than he was tall. Such people, most likely, are not in danger for their lives or have confidence that they are immortal. They're lucky.

If you want to calmly climb at heights like such installers, then you will have to work with the deep subconscious in order to understand the causes of fear and reconfigure it. This requires hypnosis or other similar techniques. But if you need to slightly remove the anxiety before the height, the technique will be lower.

Nature's Fears

Despite the fact that these are rare phobias, they exist in medical practice:

  1. Brontophobia. Fear of thunder. Cowardice can manifest itself in both children and adults.
  2. Astrophobia. Some believe that these are stupid and strange fears that appear at the sight of the starry sky. But in medical practice, cases of such a phobia have been noted.
  3. Anemophobia. Fear at the sight of strong, gusty winds, storms, storms. This psychological disorder is caused by the anxiety of a person who fears for his life.

Where does fear come from?

From birth and throughout life, a person learns. Fear is one of the states acquired by experience or obtained as a result of communication with other people. Fear is not at all inherent in babies. Their first fears, which appear as they grow, are caused by the first pain and discomfort. A clean brain greedily absorbs and processes information that allows it to avoid unpleasant sensations in the future.

Oddly enough, parents most often become the first teachers in the knowledge of fear. “Don’t run - you’ll fall!”, “Don’t go near the dog - it will bite!”, “Don’t you dare touch it - it will hurt!” These and other “No” that have not received an explanation become the seeds of fears, which subsequently grow like a snowball.

Fear of people

What have people done wrong to you that you are starting to fear them? Think about it. If you were insulted as a child and were unable to respond to the aggression, then you need to deal with the underlying reasons and increase your self-esteem.

You need to figure out what exactly you are afraid of in people and dance from here. Fears can be different: physical violence, moral humiliation. If you have a strong fear of people, then you definitely need to remove the negative scenario from your past childhood. To do this, it is best to contact a professional in the contacts section.

Fear of death: what is it?

Almost every person from birth has a fear of death. There is a constant conflict in his inner world. One part of the personality strives for life, the other understands the inevitability of the processes of aging and dying.

fear of life

The fear of dying occupies a large part of a person’s inner world. Such conflict is at the center of human life. Each individual must independently deal with such phobias, since these are purely internal experiences. It is advisable to be alone for this. A person comes into this world on his own, and according to the same principle he leaves it.

If you cope with the fear of death, life will become more fulfilling. A person will be able to appreciate all its colors and enjoy them. As such a phobia progresses, it can develop into clinical symptoms. More than half of neurotics have obsessive-compulsive disorder. Such people have not fully experienced the state of death. They need to sort out their thoughts, fully understand what is happening and accept the presence of death as such. Such fear can develop into schizophrenia if it is not dealt with in time. Typically, this disease develops in those people who, in childhood, experienced the death of loved ones.

What is fear of life and what does it consist of? This phobia can be divided into several areas:

  1. Fear of irreversibility.
  2. Fear of causing grief to loved ones.
  3. Such people worry that they will not be able to provide adequate care for their dear circle of relatives and friends.

The reason for fear lies in the fact that a person is afraid of a painful death, which will be accompanied by pain. He does not know what will happen after death, including what will happen to the body.

For some people, death is presented as a way to get rid of suffering and fears. They see that there is no permanence in life. Everything has the ability to dissolve and crumble. Such people have a feeling of the meaninglessness of life. They see life as a complex process that takes a long time to understand, but this does not always make sense to them.

Further, such a phobia develops into self-doubt, in the future and in one’s life in general. They often suffer from grief and loneliness and feel as if no one needs them. Sometimes there is a feeling of resentment towards others. Here it is important to find strength in yourself, stop the internal dialogue, move on, not pay attention to the flow of thoughts and fears.

Fear of life refers to the flip side of fear of death. These concepts intersect with each other. A person who was afraid to die just yesterday will love life to the fullest today. The only question is about the internal settings. As soon as a person accepts life as such, himself and begins to enjoy every moment, the fear of life disappears.

It is important to get rid of such a phobia as quickly as possible. It penetrates into all spheres of life, the awareness of death causes damage to the person himself and the world around him, including family and friends. The individual’s thoughts, habits, and actions that he performed at the system level change.

How not to be afraid to drive?

I want to tell you about my experience of starting to learn to drive a car. I was 29 years old, and I decided to become a car enthusiast. My friend and I signed up for a driving school and had our first lesson with an instructor. I get behind the wheel, he says, press the gas pedal, hold it up to 2000 rpm and release. So 10 times. Then he says, hold the clutch, put it in 1st gear and slowly release the pedal and let's go.

It was very scary, driving a car for the first time in my life; passages 5 meters wide seemed insurmountable to me and I would crash into them. For the next lesson we went to the city and it was even worse, just terrible. But I graduated and received a driver’s license, bought a 2002 Mini Cooper car, and I was very afraid to drive alone when there was no instructor nearby.

You can’t even imagine what it’s like when my friend said, let’s go to practice in the center of Moscow along the 3rd ring, the Garden Ring, in Moscow traffic jams. And in the middle of the journey, he got out of the car and drove home, and told me to go straight from the Mendeleevskaya metro station along Dmitrovka to the Moscow Ring Road and from there to Altufevskoye Highway and home.

The shock was impossible, but thanks to this I began to drive the car much faster and confidently.

Therefore, the advice would be this: fear of driving a car is a normal process, a matter of habit, just practice more and your psyche will constantly gain experience and in 3-5 months you will already be an experienced driver.

Fear of dogs

What kind of dogs are you afraid of, probably the big ones? Did a dog bite you or bark a lot as a child? Then your fear is understandable. But the fear of dogs is natural for humans, since who knows what is on the animal’s mind. And if you are afraid of small dogs, then this is a little strange, since they do not pose a danger to you.

Another question is, you are afraid of dogs, so live with this fear, it is normal and protects, but another thing is, if you have a vital need to get a dog and live with a dog, then of course you need to identify and solve the problem, preferably with a psychologist, so how a psychologist will take memory deep into the past to eliminate the dog’s fear. It's easy to do.

Health-related phobias

Some people have many fears associated with the fear of contracting a particular disease.

Because of such phobias, an individual can actually get sick, but with a different disease caused by constant worries, neuroses and stress due to constant fears.

We present to your attention a description of phobias belonging to this category and their unusual names:

  1. Cancerophobia is the fear of getting cancer. By the way, this fear is present in many people, and it is especially pronounced in those who are predisposed to it. The patient lives in constant fear, and any signs serve as a reason for him to think that he has cancer. Such a person requires the help of a psychologist and, if necessary, comprehensive treatment.
  2. Physitophobia. Fear of getting tuberculosis.
  3. Speedophobia. Fear of contracting sexually transmitted diseases, including AIDS.
  4. Syphilophobia (luophobia). Such people always have fear and panic of catching syphilis. Among the striking signs the patient has is the need for constant examinations by a doctor for the presence of syphilis, identification of wounds and pimples on the skin that have nothing to do with this disease. Because of this, a person simply goes crazy and needs medical help.
  5. Patroyophobia is the fear of inheriting diseases from relatives.
  6. Maniophobia. This is the fear of ending up in a mental hospital.
  7. Toxicophobia - fear of poisoning. At an advanced stage, toxicophobe may even refuse to eat, because he believes that any food can harm him. Toxicophobia is also called the phobia of drug poisoning.
  8. Phobia of botulism and rabies is a fear of very dangerous and deadly diseases. Treatment of poisoning phobia is carried out using comprehensive physiotherapy.
  9. Lacanophobia is the fear of vegetables. Lacanophobes are afraid to eat vegetables due to possible harm and poisoning.
  10. Verminophobia. This is the fear of contracting all kinds of diseases caused by germs, viruses and bacteria.
  11. Chemophobia is a clear expression of a form of prejudice against any chemistry. These may be food products. Chemophobes often feel the fear of getting poisoned when eating certain foods. This group also includes cosmetics that can have a toxic effect on the skin. Due to the fear of contracting skin diseases, chemophobes refuse to use cosmetics. Hemophilia has the opposite meaning. The chemophile has a pronounced predilection for any chemicals and their smells.

How not to be afraid of pain?

Is the pain physical or psychological? More like physical. Why are you afraid of her? Fear of pain is a normal manifestation of the body in danger. If the body hurts, it means there is a danger to life. And our subconscious protects us. Therefore, I do not recommend removing this fear.

But another thing is at the dentist or when donating blood, you are afraid of an injection, especially at the 5th point. Well, yes, it will hurt, but if not treated, the pain can be stronger and more costly to life, so show courage and do what you are afraid of. It will heal until the wedding, as they say.

How not to be afraid of thunderstorms?

A thunderstorm is one of the natural phenomena of nature, why be afraid of it if you are not in an open field with nothing in the middle. If you find yourself in such a situation, you urgently need to find some kind of ravine and lie down in it, or simply lie down in a field, but under no circumstances should you sit, stand or run. Lightning will definitely strike.

Another thing is that if you live in a city, then tall buildings with lightning rods will save you 100%. Therefore, you are worrying in vain, everything will be fine and there is nothing to be afraid of what is natural.

Sleep paralysis - what is it?

This is another of the strong fears of people. It is connected with the fact that you wake up, but you are in a state between awakening and sleep. You can’t move, you’re completely immobilized. And the most frightening thing is that various hallucinations begin to appear, they are different for everyone. I had this happen, it was just terrible.

Some people associate sleep paralysis with a brownie who is trying to show what he doesn’t like about his owners. Believing is up to everyone, but there is a good way to get out of this state.

If you realize that you have been overcome by sleep paralysis, start moving, but not sharply and quickly, but slowly, very slowly, with each part of your body in turn. And if you believe in spirits, then read the Our Father prayer.

The problem of phobias

Doctors view phobias as an anxiety disorder. They are often born out of an irrational fear of something that cannot cause harm. The causes of phobias are still not understood. But scientists have discovered some phenomena in our brains that may serve as their basis. The point is that people prone to phobias are in an increased state of excitement from the fear of meeting the source of fear. It is this constant anticipation that plays a major role in intensifying the fear response. At the same time, the reaction in the amygdala of the brain of people with phobias was stronger, and in the prefrontal cortex, which controls emotions, it was weaker than in other people.
